Two South Carolina brothers killed in head-on collision

Head-on collisions are more common than they should be on South Carolina roads. Two-lane highways in the rural parts of the state are notorious for these often fatal accidents. This is because there is very little room for error when cars are coming from opposite directs on such a narrow roadway.

In a heartbreaking story from earlier this week, two brothers from Saluda County were killed in a car accident Wednesday night. Reportedly, the brothers, ages 18 and 13, were on their way home from dinner when they got caught in a storm near Ridge Spring.

10 things all golf cart drivers in South Carolina should know

With the warmer weather and longer summer days, a golf cart can be a leisurely way to get from one place to another in South Carolina. But most people fail to recognize how serious a golf cart accident can be. Golf cart accidents claim the lives of too many people each year, and summertime is when they are most likely to occur.

That's why it's important to stay up-to-date on the state's golf cart rules and regulations. Not only will this help golf cart drivers stay safe, it can also prevent them from receiving a citation and fine. Here are 10 facts to keep in mind while driving a golf cart in South Carolina this summer:

What to know about moped and scooter laws in South Carolina

Mopeds can be a fun and inexpensive way of getting around South Carolina. However, if you live in a busy city like Columbia, they can also be extremely dangerous to take on the road. In order to avoid getting into a serious accident while traveling on a moped, it's extremely important to know the laws.

A freshman student at Coastal Carolina University said he knows how dangerous mopeds can be, especially on the highways, but money will be tight for the next few years, so he looks forward to spending less on gas. He said it costs him just $2 or $3 to fill up his moped, which he said he does a couple times each week.

Biggest distraction to teenage drivers: teenage passengers

Distraction is a factor in many fatal car accidents in South Carolina. It seems that cellphones are often pinpointed as the biggest distraction to teenage drivers. However, a new study reveals just how dangerous having other teens in the vehicle can be.

The study, which was conducted by the Automobile Association of America's Foundation for Traffic Safety, discovered that a 16- or 17-year old driver's risk of death per mile driven increases by 44 percent with one passenger under the age of 21 in the car (and no older passengers).

Study: Returning veterans face new dangers on the roads

All too many veterans returning from overseas deployments are confronted with the scars of war, both physical and psychological. Adding to their problems are statistics that show war veterans face an increased likelihood of being involved in a car accident once they return home.

The insurance group USAA studied accident statistics involving 158,000 servicemen and women who had a combined total of 171,000 deployments over a three year time period, ending in February 2010. For the entirety of the study, the armed forces were engaged in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Watch for bikes: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Motorcycle accidents claim the lives of far too many South Carolina residents each year. Sadly, many of these motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers who simply fail to see motorcycles on the roads. For this reason, May has been recognized nationally as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, just in time for the beginning of riding season.

"Motorcyclists take to the highways in large numbers every spring, and it's the responsibility of all road users to acknowledge us safely and attentively," the president of the American Motorcyclists Association said. "This is why many states and local governments officially promote motorcycle awareness during the months of May."

Research shows motorcycle accidents decrease with experience

Studies have shown that the most dangerous period of time for motorcycle riders is the first year after they get their licenses and the first month they drive, in particular. The studies suggest that the likelihood of motorcycle accidents drop sharply after drivers gain experience and confidence in handling their bikes.

This is why researchers recommend against fast-track weekend training courses aimed at getting novice motorcyclists their licenses swiftly. Such abbreviated training regimens, the researchers indicate, do not have the effect of lowering the risk of accidents, and could even heighten that risk in some instances.

OSHA criticized for stalling on new safety rules

Workers' compensation is a system that was set up to help cover the medical bills and lost wages of workers who are injured on the job. On the other hand, the purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is to prevent these accidents from happening in the first place by implementing safety regulations in the workplace.

Unfortunately, according to a government report it appears that workers in the United States could be in harm's way because OSHA is taking much longer than it should in adopting new safety rules to protect workers from harmful conditions and substances. The report was recently released by the Government Accountability Office.

Four killed in South Carolina wrecks last weekend

Sadly, fatal car accidents tear apart hundreds of families in South Carolina each year. Even though cars have been designed with improved safety features over the years, collisions at high speeds are often deadly.

Last weekend, car accidents in South Carolina claimed the lives of four people, according to the state Department of Public Safety. The figure covers fatal accidents occurring between 6 p.m. on Friday through midnight on Sunday.

South Carolina child killed, man charged in ATV accident

With warm weather approaching, many people in South Carolina and elsewhere will begin enjoying the outdoors on ATVs and other recreational vehicles. While ATVs can be thrilling, they can also be extremely dangerous, especially when safety rules and regulations are not followed.

In an extremely tragic example of this, a South Carolina toddler was killed in an ATV accident earlier this month. The accident occurred on Pee Dee Highway in Horry County, and a 27-year-old Conway man has been arrested in connection with the accident.
